This weekend I was in the mood to make soup. That quickly ended with an epic failure in the soup department from crushed instead of diced tomatoes. It will still get eaten, but just wasn't the plan. So in order to make the apartment smell better than cooked tomatoes, I decided to make applesauce.
Making applesauce has so many perks: its easy, it tastes good and it makes everything smell good! I ran out to the store and bought a bag of gala apples, ~9 medium apples, that were on sale (its like the store wanted me to make applesauce!). I make applesauce in my crockpot because it is so simple and virtually hands off, which I love.
I washed and cut my apples into small chunks. Now normally I would peel the apples. However, I realized that I don't have a peeler at my apartment...epic failure #2. I was ok with the peels staying on though because that is how my grandma used to make applesauce...good memories.

Some crockpot recipes call for additional water and sugar to the apples. Because I was working with gala apples and they are naturally quite sweet I didn't add sugar (and i'm glad I didn't!). I also didn't add water since in the crockpot the water content from the apples is quite enough.
I sprinkled my desired amount of cinnamon over the top of the cut apples and mixed. The crockpot was put on High and was left for ~2 hours. After 2 hours I used a fork to break up some of the apple pieces a bit more. Some people like to use immersion blenders, but I like my applesauce a bit chunkier.
I left the applesauce on Low for a few more hours and then gave it a try. It was delicious! Sweet and warm and made the whole apartment smell like fall. I plan to give my applesauce another try this week with a mix of apples and plums that I got from my boyfriend's mom!
Happy Chilly Fall Monday!
