I apologize for not having a normal Monday post, but with the traveling in the morning and working the second half of the day I couldn't work it in. The rest of my weekend at home flew by and is now just a memory as we're halfway through the week.
Sunday was full of a successful birthday party for the newest one year old. My sister-in-law always does a fantastic job planning such well thought out and memorable parties/events. This birthday was nothing less. Everything centered around a Curious George/Monkey theme complete with banana splits for dessert.
The night before the party I decided that I wanted to give cake decorating a try. I have never really attempted it, but it seemed like fun and my mom and I had a little bit of time to try something new. My mom made her famous chocolate mayonnaise cake (which was perfect since my nephew is allergic to milk) and I made fondant out of marshmallows. I followed the recipe here (http://candy.about.com/od/fondantcandyrecipes/r/mm_fondant.htm) and watched a few videos. Much to my surprise, again since this was the first time I had ever attempted it, the fondant turned out pretty well. It was a little tricky to work with because of it's stickiness, but overall was neat to get a little creative. I made a small monkey cake to use as a smash cake for my little guy.
I really did enjoy the cake decorating aspects and hope to get into it a bit more in the future. We'll see who the next trial cake eater is!
Happy Hump Day!
