As you all have likely heard, the famous Dr. Oz is under fire from senators regarding his promotion of supplements on his show. http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/17/health/senate-grills-dr-oz/. Most dietitians cheered when they heard this news.
The main issue is that Dr. Oz uses his show as a way to discuss products that don't have the scientific evidence to back them up. Most of his show is used to promote the next best product rather than focusing on healthy eating and increased exercise. Remember: There is no magic pill and no supplement is going to help you drastically lose weight without diet and exercise.

All of this news about Dr. Oz reminds us how supplements are handled by the government. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does not set regulations for supplements and companies do not need approval by the FDA before selling to the public. The FDA can investigate and remove products if they are deemed unsafe, but it is much easier for a supplement to get on the market than for the FDA to remove it.
Following a healthy lifestyle including proper diet and exercise is a much more effective long-term solution to weight loss and health than supplements and medications. While I do not oppose the use of all supplements and medications, I think it is important to seek assistance from qualified and respected professionals (RDs and doctors who know your medical history) when determining their use. This again reveals that you cannot always trust what you hear. Do your research and be a knowledgeable, educated patient!
