I've recently ventured into improving my green thumb. I have a fascination with growing my own produce and herbs rather than having to go to the store. There is a little bit of pride and joy in increasing your own sustainability.
While I have been wanting to try a garden, the initiative came as a bet between the man-piece and I. After garden babysitting for a friend, the boy was not very impressed with my watering skills and challenged me to grow a garden of my own.
So on Memorial Day, we took a long trip to Home Depot to pick up the necessities. Thankfully, the boy is pretty good at building things so the creation of the raised bed garden went quickly. We devised a box that was 4x4x1. The box was then filled with a mix of garden soil, mushroom compost and chopped up leaves that had been left in the side of the yard since the fall. My mother had suggested the leaves after using them in her garden. The three "soils" were mixed together and then the planting began. We chose to plant yellow squash, yellow and red bell peppers, roma tomatoes, basil, jalapeno peppers and cucumbers. We've been watering everyday, but luckily the weather has helped to take some of that burden. So far it's been a fun experience where i'm learning lots along the way.
Our biggest issue now is dealing with ants in the garden and finding a natural solution for that. If you have any suggestions please pass them along! Below is a comparison of the day we planted the garden and less than one week later! I'll keep you all updated!
